Beginner’s Guide to Keeping Hens - Sun Sept 6th

€80.00

WHEN: Sunday Sept 6th

TIME: 1-4pm

HOST: Rachel O’Connor

Are you interested in keeping a few hens in your own garden but not sure how much is involved or where to start?

This course will provide you with all the information you need for keeping your own hens. We will take a look at the hen set up here on the estate and then head over to the granary kitchen to discuss more on how to source and care for your hens.

Aside from the pure and simple joy of keeping hens, there are plenty of other advantages. Studies have shown that organic free-range eggs contain less cholesterol than those produced in intensive farming systems. They also taste so much better and enhance the flavour of your cooking.

Topics covered:

  • Getting started - why keep your own hens? How many do you need? Where to buy? What to feed them? What’s involved in caring for them.

  • Breeds and what colour egg they lay.

  • Recommendations on choosing a coop and other supplies needed to get started.

  • Poultry Suppliers

This will be a fun and informative afternoon with tea, coffee and cake included.

You will leave with notes on all the information we discussed throughout the afternoon along with 6 fresh eggs!
